How Young Baseball Players Can Make Practice More Productive

Practice is one of the most important parts of becoming a better baseball player, but not all practice is equally productive. Young athletes can get more out of their training by approaching each session with a purpose.

Start With a Goal
Before practice begins, choose one or two skills to emphasize. A hitter might focus on making consistent contact. A pitcher might concentrate on repeating a balanced delivery. A fielder might work on footwork and throwing accuracy.

A simple goal gives the athlete something specific to concentrate on.

Quality Matters
Young players sometimes believe that taking as many swings or throws as possible automatically makes practice better. Repetition is valuable, but quality repetitions are especially important.

If a player becomes tired and starts practicing poor mechanics, continuing to repeat the movement may not be helpful. Productive training includes appropriate rest and attention to technique.

Use Different Training Situations
Baseball rarely happens in exactly the same way twice. Hitters see different pitches. Fielders react to different batted balls. Pitchers must adjust to hitters and situations.

Training can become more engaging when athletes practice a variety of situations. Technology-assisted training can also provide additional information that helps players understand what happened during a swing or other baseball activity.

Learn From Mistakes
Mistakes are part of baseball development. A missed ground ball, strikeout, or poorly located pitch can become a learning opportunity.

Instead of focusing only on the result, players can ask what happened and what they can change the next time.

Build Consistency
Improvement usually comes from repeated effort rather than one exceptional practice. A young athlete who consistently works on fundamentals can gradually build skills and confidence.

The Baseball Barn provides a training environment for baseball and softball players with instruction, camps and clinics, memberships, rentals, and HitTrax. These types of training opportunities can give young athletes different ways to practice, learn, and stay engaged with the sport.
