Hey Blue! - Umpiring Myths and Truths

MYTH - The hands are part of the bat.

TRUTH - The hands are not part of the bat; they are part of the batter. If a pitched ball hits the batter's hands while trying to avoid being hit, you have a batter hit-by-pitch. The ball is dead and the batter is awarded first base. If the batter is swinging at the pitch when hit, you do not have hit-by pitch. You have a strike. The ball is dead, but there is no base award; and, if it's strike three, the batter is out.

MYTH - When over-running first base, the batter/runner must veer to the right into foul territory.

TRUTH - The batter/runner may cross first base and veer in any direction, provided the runner makes no attempt (not even a feint) to advance to second. After overrunning or over-sliding first base, the runner is required to return to the base immediately.

What's Happening In: MLB

Sabathia and Lee Get Comfy in 2009

The New York Yankees opened their brand spanking new Yankee Stadium on April 16, 2009, against the Cleveland Indians. In that opener, the Yankees' CC Sabathia faced off against the Indians' Cliff Lee, with Lee prevailing, 10-2. Just over six months later, the Yankees hosted the first World Series game ever at the new Yankee Stadium, and once again, Sabathia and Lee faced off against each other, however this time, Lee was pitching for the Philadelphia Phillies. Two stadium debuts, same pitchers. Ironically, both pitchers were also traded by the Cleveland Indians a year after capturing Cy Young awards.
