Baseball IQ: The Skill Young Players Don't Always Practice

A player can have a strong arm and a powerful swing, but baseball also rewards something that cannot be measured with a radar gun: baseball IQ.

Baseball IQ is essentially a player's understanding of the game. It includes knowing where to be, what to watch, what might happen next and how to respond.

Start With Situational Awareness
Before every pitch, players should have some idea of what is happening.

How many outs are there? Where are the runners? Where should the ball go if it is hit to them? Is a runner likely to advance?

These questions become habits when young players are encouraged to pay attention instead of simply waiting for the ball to come their way.

Learn the Game From Every Position
One useful way to develop baseball awareness is to understand what teammates are supposed to do.

A shortstop who understands the responsibilities of the second baseman can communicate more effectively. An outfielder who knows where the cutoff player should be has a better chance of making a smart throw.

Learning multiple positions can help young players understand how individual decisions affect the entire team.

Watch the Pitch, Not Just the Batter
Players should also learn to follow the action. Watching the pitcher, batter, runners and fielders together helps children understand how quickly situations can change.

The more they see the game, the easier it becomes to recognize patterns.

Ask “What Happens Next?”
One of the simplest training questions is also one of the most valuable: What happens next?

If the ball is hit to third, where does it go? If a runner is on first and the ball is hit into the outfield, what should happen? If there are two outs, how might that change the play?

Questions like these turn practice into an opportunity to develop thinking skills.

Baseball IQ develops over time. It comes from playing, watching, discussing situations and learning from mistakes.

Physical skills will always matter. But when young athletes combine those skills with a better understanding of the game, they become more prepared, confident and useful teammates.
