If you're new to baseball, one of the first things to learn is the strike zone. It’s an invisible box over home plate that determines whether a pitch is a strike or a ball. The top of the zone is roughly at the batter’s chest, and the bottom is around the knees.
Why does it matter? Because the strike zone shapes every duel between pitcher and hitter. A pitcher aims to hit the corners—tough spots for a batter to reach—while the batter tries to judge quickly whether to swing. Learning the strike zone helps you appreciate why some pitches look good but get called balls, or why hitters sometimes swing at tricky pitches. Once you can “see” the strike zone, the game becomes much easier to follow!
